What is Suvarnaprashan?

Suvarnaprashan (also called Suvarna Prashana) is a classical Ayurvedic formulation mentioned in the ancient text Kashyapa Samhita. The name comes from "Suvarna" (gold) and "Prashana" (to administer or consume). It is one of the 16 Samskaras (sacred rituals) recommended in Ayurveda for children.

The formulation consists of:

Why is it given only on Pushyanakshatra?

In classical Ayurveda, Pushyanakshatra (the Pushya lunar asterism) is considered the most auspicious time to administer medicines, especially those intended for children. It is believed that the body's receptivity to herbal preparations, including gold, is enhanced during this period, maximising the benefits of the formulation.

Suvarnaprashan is recommended for children from birth (0 months) up to 13 years of age. It is most effective when started early, ideally in the first year of life and continued regularly each month on Pushyanakshatra.

How many doses are needed?

For best results, Suvarnaprashan should be given continuously for a minimum of 120 doses (i.e., 120 consecutive Pushyanakshatra days = approximately 10 years). Even a few months of regular use produces noticeable benefits in immunity and cognitive development.
